It is one of the largest squirrel species, has a head-and-body length of about 8.3–8.7 in, and its tail is about 8.7–9.4 in long. Currently, 16 recognized squirrel subspecies are available globally. The living squirrels are divided into five subfamilies, with about 58 genera and some 285 species. The oldest squirrel fossil, Hesperopetes, dates back to the Chadronian (late Eocene, about 40–35 million years ago) and is similar to modern flying squirrels.
