WebEarnie, In both cases, the du executable came with cygwin that I downloaded. The 1.1.4 du shows correct sizes, 1.1.8 does not. I did notice that the version of du has changed from 3.16 to 4.0 going from cygwin 1.1.4 to 1.1.8 (that's why I included that information in my original email). I did not try to compile du 3.16 with cygwin 1.1.8.
